PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Summer Time

by Wagner Dotto

You may choose to visit Rome, Amsterdam, Greece, Mexico or perhaps Italy, Cairo or Cuba — all in one day, by car, without much driving.

Towns with international names abound in New York state. According to an expert, this was part of a fad that went on between around 1810 and 1840. At the time, some communities were given their names by founders because they reminded them of their country of origin. That’s why we see municipalities in the state with names such as Naples, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Jerusalem and Peru, just to name a few.

This is just one of the fascinating stories we’re running in the 31st annual Summer Guide, published recently by Local News Inc., our parent company.

The 108-page booklet is packed with information about events, fun things to do and things to see. It includes a comprehensive events calendar, listing great events from June through October.

The guide is populated with advertising promoting fun stuff — looking at the ads is pretty interesting; that’s how we find out things about the region.

We also have a special story on the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal, with some historical photos; a story about things to do in Tipperary Hill, a historical neighborhood in Syracuse; several  listings showing where  zoos, farmers’ markets, theme parks are and much more.

The publication is available through all Wegmans locations, many Tops Friendly Markets, Price Chopper and other local grocery stores. In addition, we place the guide at local hotels, motels, campgrounds, RV sites, restaurants, diners, visitor centers along I-81 and many other high-traffic locations.

We thank the more than 200 advertisers who chose to advertise with us. They provide the means to produce and distribute the publication.

In exchange, they get unparalleled exposure. We estimate the glossy publication reaches over 250,000 readers in the region. Our website — www.cnysummer.com — gets about 10,000-15,000 hits a month.

Our hope is that many of those readers will patronize those who advertise.
