The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has selected Stephanie Gandulla to serve as the first superintendent of the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary.

Gandulla, who currently serves as research protection coordinator at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, brings extensive experience in marine resource protection, maritime heritage preservation, research, education, outreach and community engagement.

Throughout her career with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Gandulla has worked closely with communities, tribal nations, government agencies, local organizations and other partners to advance marine conservation and connect the public with the Great Lakes’ natural and cultural resources.

She holds a master’s degree in maritime studies from East Carolina University and has extensive technical experience in scientific diving, marine operations, research and monitoring, interpretation and resource protection.

As superintendent, Gandulla will provide leadership for the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary and work with regional partners and stakeholders to advance its mission of protecting and conserving Lake Ontario’s significant marine resources and maritime heritage.
