First time the health system expands outside Oswego County

Oswego Health is expanding to Onondaga County.
“Yes — our expansion south remains very much part of Oswego Health’s strategic direction and it is now being realized with the opening of Oswego Health Medical Practice in Clay,” said Oswego Health President and CEO Michael C. Backus.
“This move reflects a thoughtful, mission-driven investment aligned with our three-year strategic plan to strengthen access to primary care and respond to documented community need, particularly in northern Onondaga County where provider shortages persist.”
That expansion is being accomplished through the establishment of a new, primary care site in Clay, located within the Belgium Meadows Office Park.
Clay PrimeCare offers comprehensive primary care services for patients aged 5 and older, along with on-site laboratory services to support timely diagnosis and treatment.
“In addition, we will introduce rotating specialty care office hours at the Clay location, including orthopedics, general surgery and gastroenterology. These services will be provided by board-certified clinicians within the Oswego Health Medical Practice network, ensuring coordinated, integrated care,” he explained.
The benefits are significant for both patients and the broader community.
Expanding access to primary care improves prevention, supports earlier diagnosis and enhances continuity of care within a single, integrated health system.
“As a nonprofit healthcare organization, this expansion is not about shifting care away from our existing communities — it’s about growing access where the need exists, strengthening the healthcare safety net across Central New York and ensuring patients can receive high-quality, coordinated care close to home,” he said.
The health system has 18 physical locations, including Oswego to Pulaski to Hannibal.
