Watertown International Airport (ART) announced the completion of the Runway 10-28 Rehabilitation Project. The full-length runway is now operational, ensuring safer and more efficient aviation operations for the North Country community and beyond.
The project, executed by Rifenburg Construction, Inc., repaved 3,000 feet of Runway 10-28, using over 14,000 tons of asphalt and applying more than 87,000 square feet of runway marking paint to meet FAA standards. Despite challenges presented by the rainy spring season, the work was completed in only 33 days — two days ahead of the projected timeline.
“This project’s successful completion is a testament to the skill and dedication of our contractor and project teams,” said Scott Dalton, senior airport maintenance mechanic. “We’re glad to open the runway earlier than expected, ensuring minimal disruption to operations”
The rehabilitated stretch of Runway 10-28 is expected to extend its lifespan by 10 years. Preparations are already being made for Phase 2 of the project, slated for spring 2026, which will enhance additional sections of the runway.
Additional project highlights include safety area adjustments to meet regulatory standards. Over time, outside of air carrier operations, further punch list improvements such as asphalt grooving, permanent pavement markings and the installation of a supplemental wind cone will be completed.
A Commitment to Infrastructure and Community
With a total cost of $3.8 million, the Runway 10-28 Rehabilitation Project reinforces Watertown International Airport’s dedication to improving infrastructure and delivering superior travel experience. The project was predominantly funded through federal and state investments, with significant contributions from the FAA Airport Improvement Program which is funded by allocation from Airport and Airway Trust Fund which is a cumulation of user fees from airline ticket and aviation fuel taxes.
“Projects like this one are an example of our team’s commitment to better serving our community while maintaining the highest safety standards,” said Grant Sussey, airport director.
Watertown International Airport continues to provide reliable, cost-effective and convenient air travel for Northern New York residents. Operating daily flights to Philadelphia through American Airlines, ART connects travelers to destinations worldwide.
