Start-up companies often need a boost to launch and grow.

GENIUS NY is a start-up program designed by CenterState CEO and funded by Empire State Development to provide the investment a few ambitious and lucky companies need for their big break in drone, robotics and AI technology.

“The goal is to help startups scale quickly by providing funding, mentorship and access to the Central New York innovation ecosystem while also driving long-term economic growth in the region,” said Kara Jones, director of programs and engagement and director of GENIUS NY.

The awards include $1 million grand prize and four additional $500,000 runners-up prizes. To participate, finalists present their ideas live on stage on May 7 as to what autonomous systems they’re building and why Syracuse is the perfect location to grow their businesses.

Jones likened the event to the TV show “Shark Tank.”

“Companies are evaluated based on the strength of their technology, market potential, business model, traction and team, but also on how well they plan to integrate into the Central New York community,” Jones said. “We’re looking for teams who see Syracuse as a place to build, test and scale: finding customers here, running pilots, using the INSPYRE Innovation Hub, partnering with local service providers and hiring local talent. The goal is for companies to become ‘sticky’ in the region, not just pass through.”

Hundreds of applicants apply annually and any eligible startup may submit their application during the review window. This year, it’s between Jan. 28 and May 17. The program is currently in Cohort 9 and is accepting applications for the 10th. Jones said that those participating are already hiring in the Syracuse area.

“New York’s strategic investments in the uncrewed aerial systems industry, bolstered by the GENIUS NY accelerator, continue to promote and fuel new growth,” said Hope Knight, Empire State Development president, CEO and commissioner. “This renowned program in Central New York attracts and welcomes forward-thinking UAS innovators from around the world, ensuring that pioneering ideas take flight in the region.”

Those participating in the program must operate their companies in Central New York for a minimum of one year. In addition to the cash, winners also receive use of office space in the state’s largest business incubator, CenterState’s INSPYRE Innovation Hub. The site provides access to industry-oriented facilities, equipment and collaborative partners to help the start-ups thrive. Winners also receive mentoring and access to possible investors.

Past GENIUS NY companies include Flyhound and Modovolo, which expanded their presence in Central New York. The program has drawn more than 45 new companies to the area since it began in 2017. Close to $27 million has been invested in the companies directly through the program and the companies have raised another $500 million in subsequent funding.

“The GENIUS NY accelerator is making a real impact here in Central New York,” said Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon. “I have no doubt that the 10th round of this accelerator will continue to build on that success as these incredible innovators from across the globe bring their ideas to Onondaga County. This focused program provides businesses with all of the tools and resources they need to ensure their long-term success here and we are looking forward to seeing the groundbreaking work that emerges from this latest round.”

The high-tech nature of the companies naturally spurs more manufacturing in the area, as successful start-ups will continue to hire more workers to build their equipment and purchase the parts they need.

“The GENIUS NY accelerator has proven to be a remarkable success,” said Randy Wolken, co-chair of the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council, president and CEO of MACNY-The Manufacturers Association.

Le Moyne College President Linda M. LeMura also voiced enthusiasm.

“We are so excited to see what the next round and these innovative entrepreneurs will bring to the table,” LeMura said. “This focused program is helping to ensure that New York state and Central New York remain at the forefront of the growing UAS industry, creating new opportunities and jobs for residents in the region for decades to come.”
