How’s it going at the future site of Micron in Clay? The company plans to invest $100 billion over the next decade. Announced in 2022, the expansion should employ about 9,000 and also bring 4,500 construction jobs and 40,000 indirect jobs. We recently spoke with Carson Henry, Micron senior director for US expansion strategic programs.
Q: What type of infrastructure will be necessary at the Clay site?
Carson Henry: Micron’s Central New York site will include up to four fabs, each with approximately 600,000 square feet of cleanroom space. Dozens of additional structures, including office buildings and parking garages, will be on site to support operations. The proposed Micron site will also include ancillary on-site electrical substations, water and wastewater pre treatment and storage and industrial gas storage. In addition, a Micron child care center and employee health and wellness center will be located nearby.
Q: What kind of building is this and how many stories high?
A: Micron’s New York clean room space is the largest ever announced in the U.S. Each of the four potential fabs will stand three stories high while covering 28 acres of ground, roughly the size of the JMA Wireless Dome, totaling up to 2.4 million square feet of clean room space. The fabs will be made of steel and concrete, ensuring controlled, airtight environments for wafer production.
Q: What about parking and other elements on the grounds for employees?
A: Once the fabs are operational, we are expecting to have 9,000 parking spaces available for employees and other personnel.
Q: What is the timeline and when will the factory be operational?
A: Micron is on track to break ground on the site in November 2025 and the first fab is expected to come online and contribute to output in calendar year 2028, ramping in line with market demand over the next decade. We aim for the fab to be operational and have wafers out the door later this decade.
