Before Harborfest had a name or a stage or a single firework, there was Rosemary Nesbitt. Now, nearly 40 years later, Bridget Dolbear takes the reins as the new executive director. She succeeds Dan Harrington who served as executive director from 2023 until 2026.
The 2026 Oswego Harborfest is the 37th annual celebration.
There isn’t a better view in the entire United States, Chuck Handley, board president, said of the Lake Ontario vista.
He introduced the new director at 5 p.m. Monday in front of the bell tower in Breitbeck Park.
“The Harborfest board of directors did an extensive search after receiving more than 21 well-qualified resumes,” he said. “We are so lucky that our number one candidate, Bridget Dolbear, has accepted the position.
“Her experience and leadership over the past 27 years at Oswego County Opportunities made her the top candidate for this position. She is highly motivated to grow this festival and keeping its core mission of keeping it a free and family-based event. We thank Dan Harrington for the thousands of volunteer hours he has put in as executive director. The festival is in great shape because of Dan’s leadership.”
Dolbear said she “officially started today at 9 a.m.”
“I am absolutely thrilled and honored,” Dolbear said. “Thanks for the warm welcome and your belief in me. For decades this festival has been the highlight of our summers; a celebration that draws families from all over the region.
“An event of this scale is a massive team effort. I want to thank the board, staff, the volunteers and the sponsors who have dedicated themselves to make this magic happen year after year. As someone who cares deeply about our community. taking on his role is an incredible privilege and responsibility. My focus will be to build on its strong foundation. Together our team is going to work tirelessly to make sure that Harborfest continues to thrive and be a part of bringing people together for generations to come.”
Has Harrington given her any advice? “I haven’t had a chance to talk to her yet,” he quipped. “She’s going to do a great job. She has my help.”
