Valley News Publisher Pulls up Stakes for Different Job

Thomas Cuskey leaves twice-weekly publication in Fulton
By Lou Sorendo

Thomas Cuskey is leaving his position as publisher of The Valley News in Fulton. April 4 is his last day.

Cuskey is going to be director of sales and training for Free Community Papers of New York.

FCPNY is a trade association made up entirely of free distribution shopping guides, newspapers and periodicals that publish throughout the state of New York.

Cuskey has served as a volunteer and board member for many years with the FCPNY, which has an approximate circulation of 6 million homes.

Cuskey has been working for Scotsman Media Group, owner of The Valley News. Cuskey had been serving as vice president of publications and associate publisher of the Scotsman Press Pennysavers in Syracuse, publishing weekly community papers with a circulation of more than 250,000.

Recently, the Scotsman Media Group announced that it has discontinued publications of its Pennysavers due to inadequate economic conditions. It also slashed one third of its workforce.

The company, headquartered in Syracuse, has laid off about 60 workers. None of the layoffs affected The Valley News, which employs 13 workers. Most of the layoffs occurred at the Scotsman Media Group in Syracuse.

The Valley News is continuing business as usual. Its publishing schedule will remain the same, according to Scotsman Media Group President Bill Veit.

Ironically, Cuskey will remain in the same building as Scotsman at 750 W. Genesee St., Syracuse. Scotman rents office space to Free Community Papers of NY. “He’s really just moving down the hall,” Veit said.

“Tom and I have been friends and partners for 23 years. He is first class and I have enjoyed working with him and wish him all the best in his future work,” Veit said.

Veit said he will name an interim leader at The Valley News while he undergoes the process of selecting a new publisher there.

The Valley News has been serving the greater Fulton area since 1947. It is mailed to area subscribers each Wednesday and Saturday.

It also offers coverage in the Fulton and Phoenix areas each Saturday with The Patriot-Advertiser, direct-mailed to local non-subscribers. Together, the publications reach more than 12,000 area homes, according to its website.

In 2010, the Scotsman Media Group in Syracuse, long time printer of the publication, acquired The Valley News.

Cuskey joined the Scotsman Press in 1990 and developed a two-day sales and advertising training course used by members of the FCPNY. He has also facilitated other sales and management training topics for FCPNY and its members.

Cuskey is a graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.

In May 2010, Cuskey was ordained as a permanent deacon in the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese and is assigned to Christ the King parish in Liverpool.

Cuskey resides in Liverpool with his wife, Angela. They have four children and two grandchildren.
